I don’t have kids so I’m not around diapers a lot, but when I came across this 1977 ad for Pampers I recognized this package right away.  My little sister was born in 1979, I was 5 years old and I remember thinking that was my sister on the box (she did look pretty similar) and thought they were made for her.

So the old box has a horizontal drawing/photo of a cute baby looking at you to make some sort of connection.  The main colors of the package are a kind of aqua-blue and white.  The title is a simple white serif-type font that stands out nicely against the bottom band of color.  There is a lot of information on the box:  what age and weight baby these are for,  they’re new, thicker, softer, more absorbent and have custom-fit tapes.  Even with all this info the package looks clean and uncluttered.

The new package has a little different color theme.  The blue is similar to the old box but the white has been replaced by yellow.  The title text is much smaller and looks casual and drawn and it also has a drawing of a heart above it.  The band behind it has moved to the top and has a wave to it.   ”Newborn” is now called” New baby” and not just a mention of they type of tape but a small diagram of the “secure me fit”.  Also the lone image of the baby is now a photo of a mother and child, with neither of  them making eye contact with the consumer. In general there are more colors, more action and it looks like a more vibrant package.

While the new Pampers looks brighter and more cheery, I’ll have to go with the old one because it looks more “orderly” and serious about being a diaper of course because the baby looks like my little sister : )

The old one is the best. It reminds me of playing dolls when I was little. The image of folded nappies at the top of the box reminds me of the packs of nappies you could get for dolls back then. So cute! :) The newer one is too crowded and not personal enough.

I just love that “Modern 20″-ish font so much on the old packaging! I had to vote for “old”. :D

I like a lot the good old wingfold design and I hope that P&G bring back them to celebrate Pampers’ 50th birthday. Also, I wish they made the wingfold diapers for adults with two pair of tapes in three sizes (medium, large and extra large) with and without the stay dry gathers.
