Marie’s Dressing

Marie’s must have discontinued their Sour Cream and Dill dressing because I haven’t seen it in a while, but let me tell you, it was delicious.  I don’t know why they always discontinue good stuff.  I recently found an ad for one of my all-time favorite products ever and wonder how something so awesome gets the axe but… I guess it happens.

The old jar is kind of mason jar shaped and clear with primarily one color used for the printing.  The title font is slightly italic and font used for the variety of dressing is a little cartoonish looking.   Besides containing 12 ounces, we’re informed that this is new and that no preservatives are added.  The lid uses reverse colors of the jar and also states the variety along the perimeter.  It’s not anything to write home about but it’s pleasant enough and easy to read.

The new jar features a multi colored covering over the container which bows out looking more like a mayo jar.  The title text is very similar to the old one but its larger, a little more scripty and has an outer glow added.  The variety of dressing is now in a horizontal band towards the bottom and I don’t know if it’s because light blue is used for this variety but it’s a little harder to read than the old.  The background is kind of “ying-yang” divided into two halves: one is a window to see the product and one is a close up of some salad.  It’s also nice to know they still don’t use preservatives.
I don’t have any particularly strong feelings for either, but I’m not crazy about the obese shape of the new jar or the ying-yangy composition so I’ll go with the old.

Marie's Dressing: Old or New?

The new one is too cluttered. Since you’ve been doing this I’ve noticed everything now has picture on the front of the product or in this case where the product is to be deployed. Everyone is so literal nowadays, or have we just become illiterate?

I usually vote for old, but I really like the new Marie’s jars, and I hope they don’t change! They are one of the few jars out there that actually can be recycled for home canning – standard sized lids fit perfectly, and they are very solid. My homemade pickles look gorgeous in them. And I love their Super Blue Cheese dressing – which is a relatively new flavor. Sure, it has a bazillion calories, but it is perfect for a salad you’re having alongside a steak.

You know what salad dressing flavor I miss the most? Kraft Creamy Cucumber. They did away with it sometime in the 90’s – but I guess they still make it in Canada.
