Libby’s Pumpkin

Wednesday November 3rdCanned goods Category

Happy November!   I love anything with pumpkin in it so there’s always plenty o’ canned pumpkin in my cupboards for when I feel like baking something.  Oddly I’ve never made pumpkin pie, the closest I got was pumpkin cheesecake but if anyone is looking for awesome pumpkin recipes let me know, I made these killer pumpkin swirl brownies and pumpkin strusel bars and of pumpkin chocolate chip bread.  Anyway, canned pumpkin=good thing.  So convienent  and reliable.

The can on the left is from 1985 and I’ll just say I love the old logo with the three Libby’s in the Bauhaus font.  You’d think having the comny name three times on the label like that would be so obnoxious but somehow it’s adorable.
I also like how the logo is in concave bottomed rectangle. It almost looks like an award ribbon.  Also, a huge fan of stripes that ascend/descend into lighter/darker shades of the same color, as with the stripes at the top of the can.
A simple gradient background compliments the featured serving suggestion of pumpkin pie.
Says what it does- does what it says “Solid Pack Pumpkin 100% Natural”.  ‘Nuff said.

The new can.  Logo, what happened?  We’re down to one “Libby’s” that has changed to a cursive font.  Still in a ribbon like rectangle but  is more wide than tall now.  Three stripes have been replaced but two thin lines of the same color.  100% Natural has changed to 100% Pure and also added  “100% Calabaza Pura” for the Spanish-reading pumpkin shoppers.  Also added is a banner stating it’s “America’s Favorite Pumpkin” with some sort of award ribbon.
The graphic of serving suggestion looks almost identical (besides the crust and dollop style). I wonder if the daughter/son of the person who made the pie on the first can made the pie on the second can!

Libby’s is only “America’s Favorite Pumpkin” if you don’t live in New England. One Pie rules.

    I love old logos too.

Just wanted to note about the triple Libby’s (which I also love), they used to have a jingle that went thusly:

    Libby’s, Libby’s, Libby’s
    On the label, label, label
You will like it, like it, like it
    On the table, table, table

    I also find that adorable.

Of course, whenever I see Libby’s I think of that jingle too! I love the old logo because of its simplicity. The old logo is perfect – it says all it needs to say. Why clutter it up with all the other gobbledegook, especially when every company has a website where people can easily find all the info they need?

I always liked that old Libby’s logo.

The cursive Libby’s is actually the original (or at least older) Libby’s logo! It was replaced (sometime in the 1970s, I believe) by the triple Libby’s, emphasised in that catchy “Libby’s, Libby’s, Libby’s” jingle. So in changing to the cursive they decided to revert to an earlier logo, which companies sometimes do.

They could leave the Spanish off, also.
