Hershey’s Miniatures

Monday November 1stTreats Category

Happy Halloween!  I actually meant for this to be my post much earlier today and somehow here it is 8:00pm Halloween night, I’m watching Nightmare on Elm St. 3 (the best of the series) and not getting any trick-or-treaters because we live in a stupid neighborhood but anyway..
I thought posting about Hershey’s Miniatures would be appropriate for tonight.

The old bag is from a 1985 ad.  I like how the products are visible through the bag.  The label is so awesomely simple.  While I’m not super in love with the weird diamond shape but I do really like that it’s the one flat color with white outline.  The Hershey’s font is easily recognizable and the font for other words is plain but cute, yet dignified.  Like just because these are miniatures, they’re not something only for kids.

The new bag conceals the product with an opaque background and depicts the products through drawings.  I don’t really get what’s going on but the plain Hershey bar is either coming out of or going into melted chocolate.  I guess in case you are unfamiliarwith Hershey, it lets you know it’s chocolate.
The Hershey’s logo is updated with using a gradient.  The font for “miniatures” is more whimsical.

Also I’d like to point out that all of the bars wrappers are pretty much identical to their 1985 ancestors except for Special Dark.  The graphic from the same ad as this bag is pretty bad but I used it to give you an idea of how it’s changed.

Love the old one.  I like the use of the light to dark background, it looks kind of mysterious.  I’m a fan of the vertical lettering as well.  It’s the same font but the fact that it’s headed in a different direction adds a hint of intrigue (in a candy bar wrapper way).  The new one is just okay, it uses similar colors in a less dramatic way and the plain font is printed lengthwise across the front in a band of maroon.  They have also added a short description of “mildly sweet chocolate” which you’d think wouldn’t be necessary since it’s an older product but for some reason Hershey’s feels it needs some explaining.

I loved this when I was a kid! That old bag design brings back memories. Also I like that it’s clear and you can see what’s inside.

Once again, I love the old logo and bag. So simple! So iconic! And even though I’ve seen the new bag in the store if I ever had to stop and think about the Miniatures bag my mind would instantly revert to the old one. :D Same with the Special Dark. :D
