Crystal Light

Monday May 10thDrinks Category

I guess I haven’t bought Crystal Light in a while because I didn’t realise it changed from the 1986 image on the left.  I have to say I don’t keep up on powdered drinks because they always taste like powder and seems to be too tart.  Although, since it’s been so long, maybe  powder drink technology has advanced so much that I might actually think I’m drinking lemonade.

The image on the left is from a 1986 ad.  I always thought Linda Evans was the only spokesgal for CL but this ad featured a fresh-out-of-Jazzercise (and in full make up) Raquel Welch.  The canister features an image of the tippy-top of a glass with ice cubes, topped by the number of calories, flavor, title and mention of it being sugar free and the NutraSweet logo.  The title font is nice although it’s a little weird how the ”S” is disproportionateto the rest of “Crystal”.  The title is also in nice thick letters that makes it easily recognizable.  I also like that even though it looks sporty and active, they really only use 3 basic colors (not counting the NutraSweet logo).

The new package has a very light and delicate feel.  I can see how this would be appealing since if you’re drinking it you probably want to look light and delicate.   The blocky lettering has changed to an wispy cursive and the image at the bottom has changed to some lemons splashed with the drink and underlines by a ribbon of yellow.
They seem to have broken up with NutraSweet (maybe that’s why it’s 5 calories now) and in general, the design looks appealing for a diet drink. It  may not be as easy to identify the brand with the thinner font but it does demonstrate
a light, refreshing product.

I like them both but there’s something about the text and colors on the old one that seems a little more fun, although the new one looks more adult and serious about being a diet drink.

I think this is the first time that I’ve voted for the “new” look on a product you’ve featured, but I was just never a fan of that Crystal Light font. :D It sure does scream !1986! though! :D

The old one, definitely. I love that font!

It’s still NutraSweet, just not called by the brand name. Somewhere buried in the ingredients will be aspartame. Same thing. (There may also be some other non-nutritive sweeteners as using more than one tends to mask the bitterness.)
